What crime is 12 Desperate Hours based on?
12 Dangerous Hours follows an armed criminal who holds a family captive and forces their mother to drive him through a night of savage violence and terrible plots. This story is similar to that of Gary Lee Quinlivan, who was ultimately convicted of second-degree murder, first-degree murder, and first-degree kidnapping.
Her crimes began in Washington state in 1963, when Joan Marlatt ended her relationship with her then-boyfriend Quinlivan, who was unhappy. To contact her former partner, who lived with her mother, she sought the help of an acquaintance, Fritz Donahue. According to accounts, Quinlivan accidentally murdered his friend when he fell to the ground and his gun went off.
The autopsy showed the following:
“[Donahue] “He died from a shotgun blast to the head, with the wound in the horizontal plane, facts compatible with the fact that the gun was held at shoulder height and fired directly at the deceased.”
Quinlivan then fled into the woods and outside Patricia Jean Jaque’s home, where he forced her to give him a ride. The plot of 12 Hours was influenced by this. The following is an excerpt from the film’s synopsis:
“Val agrees to take Denny wherever he wants and becomes his reluctant companion as he embarks on a wave of devastation to save them and her husband Mark (David Conrad), who was due to return home at any moment. Despite the heartbreaking events, Val develops a connection with her kidnapper and uses it to save the lives of witnesses, herself, and even her kidnapper (2023).”
Last Dance, Last Chance, and Other True Cases: Crime Reports, Vol. 8 also included a disturbing account of this event. Gina Gershon told KTLA 5 about the situation:
“I was shocked…I’m tired of reading about another deadly murder on the news. It makes me very sad to think that these children go to school and may never leave it. It’s just terrible; “America has failed as a civilization and things are not getting better.”
Lifetime will debut 12 Hours on February 25, 2023 at 8 p.m. EDT. It will also be available to view the following day.
