January 9 was recorded in history books with great achievements of Indian scientists. In fact, on January 9, 1982, the first Indian expedition reached the icy continent of Antarctica, the southernmost tip of the earth. It is a huge achievement for India. The expedition began in 1981 and the team had a total of 21 members, led by Dr. SZ Qasim. Qasim was then Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Director of the National Institute of Oceanography.
The purpose of this mission is to conduct scientific research here. The group started from Goa on 6 December 1981 and returned to Goa from Antarctica on 21 February 1982.
