Backed by legendary Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Tank Girl Jamie Hewlett, virtual band Gorillaz burst onto the scene in the late ’90s, quickly changing the look and sound of popular music Later.
Distinguished by a fusion of styles and themes that creates an effortless sense of fun, Gorillaz became the identity reboot of a generation.
Hewlett’s unforgettable graphic FX captured the tattoo renderings immediately, and since then, the Gorillaz tattoo has enjoyed unending popularity in its many incarnations. The long-running tattoo animation includes the band’s core animated members: Stuart “2-D” Pot (vocals and keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Russell Hobbs (percussion) and Noodle (lead guitar ), and from there the tattoo design incorporates some background settings and song lyrics. The colors are bold and the style bold, just as the band intended.
Gorillaz were the answer to an MTV culture more obsessed with image than content, and the band’s followers were revolutionaries in their own right. The man who proudly wears the Gorillaz logo on his skin will move to a different, deeper beat that will not be swayed by the masses. Windmills or people walking on the street smoking weed, Gorillaz’s brilliance lies in the details that only like-minded men can express.
