Why did Praveen Nath commit suicide?

For the first time in Kerala, Praveen Nath from Nenmara, Palakkad, was one of the three students admitted in 2018 under the transgender quota for undergraduate studies at Maharajas College, Ernakulam. No one anticipated that he would play the role of a bodybuilder when he gave up his studies two years later. The 24-year-old boy won the title of Mr. Kerala in the special category, making him the first transgender bodybuilder from Kerala. Praveen’s transition from a girl to a transgender included hardships and humiliations, so life for him was not easy.

“I don’t want to point fingers at anyone; this is what society has instilled in them. In their eyes, people like me are not typical people. So far I have learned that this will change with time and effort,” Praveen added. He had gender reassignment surgery two years ago after discovering that his body was more attracted to a “she” than to him. Unexpectedly, he started bodybuilding a year ago. “I joined a gym in Palakkad because I wanted to lose more weight, but I didn’t feel as comfortable there as at home. My last stop was RS Fitness Center in Thrissur, where I was lucky enough to have Vinu Mohan as my trainer. From then on, my life changed,” Praveen recalled.

Praveen Nath, Kerala’s first transgender bodybuilder, and recipient of the Mr. Kerala in 2021, committed suicide on May 4. He attempted suicide and was undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College Hospital when he died. Three months after marrying transgender girl Rishana Aishu on February 14, Praveen passed away. She is a model and winner of Miss Malabar Paegent. Praveen, a resident of Palakkad, was actively involved in the LGBTQIA+ Sahayathrika group in Thrissur. Many people expressed their condolences for his passing on Twitter.
