James Cracknell’s Early Life
James Cracknell began rowing while attending the independent Kingston Grammar School and rowed at the 1989 and 1990 World Junior Championships, winning a gold medal in 1990. He graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Human Geography in 1993, followed by a PGCE from the Institute of Education and a Master of Science (MSc) from Brunel University in 1999. James won the World Rowing Championship in in 1997, 1998 and 1999 and finally a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. In August 2000, a month before winning the gold medal in Sydney, he participated in a three-part documentary BBC’s Gold Fever. In 2018, Cracknell enrolled at Peterhouse, Cambridge to study for an MPhil in human evolution.

James Cracknell ran the London Marathon on 23 April 2006, in a time of 3 hours, finishing more than an hour ahead of rowing teammate Matthew Pinsent. In July 2008, Cracknell competed in the GBR European Triathlon Championships for his age group and in November 2009 he entered the New York Marathon. In April 2009, James completed the 125-mile non-stop Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon in a two-person K2 kayak race with canoe partner Bernie Shosbree. Cracknell attempted to break the Land’s End non-stop mixed parallel world record against John O’Groat with Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Romero in August 2009.
He became the highest-placed British athlete ever in the 25-year history of the Marathon des Sables, finishing 12th in April 2010. Cracknell competed in the Yukon Arctic Ultra six months after the accident. The cycling accident damaged his frontal lobe. He ran the 2012 London Marathon in just under three hours, one of the fastest celebrities but behind Nell McAndrew. He is also the main presenter of Channel 4’s Red Bull Air Race World Series. James is a columnist contracted to The Daily Telegraph writing on a variety of topics including sport, driving cars, gardening, cooking and other topics. In October 2013, Cracknell was announced as the Conservative candidate in the South West of England and Gibraltar.

James Cracknell married TV presenter Beverley Turner in 2002, with whom he lives in Chiswick. The couple have three children – a son, Croyde, and two daughters, Kiki and Trixie. They announced their separation on March 29, 2019 after 17 years of marriage. In January 2021, James announced his engagement to Jordan Connell. Jordan is known as a professional financier. James and Jordan met at Cambridge University in 2018. In July 2010, Cracknell was hit from behind by a petrol tanker while on his bike while attempting to cycle, row, run and swim from Los Angeles to New York. He attributed his survival to the fact that he was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time. Since the accident, he has actively supported the use of bicycle helmets.
