Roger Rogerson was born on 3 January 1941 and grew up in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown. Rogerson’s father and his maternal grandparents were Welsh immigrants. He joined the New South Wales Police Cadet Service in 1958. Rogerson handled some of the biggest cases of the early 1970s, including the Toecutter Gang Murders and the Whiskey Au Go Go fire in Brisbane . He was brought in to investigate the Ananda Marga conspiracy case, despite having no connection to the Special Branch investigating the case. In 1980, Rogerson was awarded the Peter Mitchell Award for the capture of fugitive armed robber Gary Purdey. Rogerson received a criminal conviction, which was overturned on appeal, for his involvement in drug trafficking, allegedly conspiring with notorious Melbourne drug dealer Dennis Allen to supply heroin.

Roger Rogerson was dismissed from the NSW Police Force on 11 April 1986. He spent nine months in prison in 1990 before being released on bail pending an ultimately unsuccessful appeal. After leaving the force, Rogerson worked in the construction industry as a scaffolding supplier. In February 2005 Rogerson and his wife, Anne Melocco, were convicted of lying to the Police Integrity Commission in 1999. Rogerson served 12 months with a maximum sentence of two and a half years. He was released from Kirkconnell Correctional Center on 17 February 2006. In May 2014, Rogerson was charged with the murder of Sydney student Jamie Gao, allegedly after a drug deal gone wrong . On June 15, 2016, Rogerson and McNamara were convicted of Gao’s murder.
During legal proceedings surrounding the trial of suspects in connection with the 2009 contract murder of Michael McGurk, the High Court heard evidence that, while at Cooma Correctional Center in 2014, Rogerson, McNamara and Fortunato “Lucky” Gattellari attempted to extort money from Ron Medich, a businessman and suspected mastermind of McGurk’s murder. In March 1973, shortly after the Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub fire, Sydney detective Roger Rogerson and Detective Sergeant Noel Morey were called to Brisbane to assist with the investigation. Richard Roxburgh played Rogerson in the 1995 television miniseries Blue Murder and its 2017 sequel Blue Murder: Killer Cop.
