The Boys spinoff show Gen V is facing backlash from PewDiePie fans after a character from the series made divisive comments about the popular YouTuber.
Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg is the second most subscribed creator on YouTube. He has been making videos on the platform for nearly 13 years and has amassed more than 111 million subscribers.
Although PewDiePie is currently enjoying a quiet life in Japan with his wife Marzia and their newborn child, Bjorn, the YouTube star has endured his fair share of controversy throughout his career – specifically after when he used racial slurs during a livestream in 2017.
In the months that followed, the YouTuber came under fire for his content and was accused of racism by critics.
YouTube: PewDiePiePewDiePie was the most subscribed creator on YouTube – but was eventually ousted by T-Series, then MrBeast.
Since then, these accusations seem to have subsided… but the sentiment remains, as seen in a sentence recently used in the show ‘Gen V’, a spin-off of ‘The Boys’ of Amazon.
Gen V’s PewDiePie series causes outrage from fans
Gen V follows a group of college-aged superheroes who attend a university to hone their superpowers, living in the same universe as ‘The Boys’.
In one scene, a character (who is an influencer and boasts a YouTube channel) calls himself “like PewDiePie but without the bad content.”
This line went viral on social media, making many of the YouTuber’s fans seemingly unhappy about the comment.
“Immediately stopped watching,” one user wrote on Twitter/X. “Terrible writing.”
“Can they lose contact any longer?” another asked.
“I just watched the first episode of Gen V and it was great. Well, except for that line. What a cringe. But hey, PewDiePie’s mission right now is to be a good father to his children. God bless him for that,” said another.
PewDiePie himself has not publicly commented on this line at the time of writing and continues to post vlogs documenting his daily life with his new family in Japan.
