Known as Kapal, the Sanskrit translation of skull or begging bowl, the Tibetan skull has been used in sacred Hindu and Tantric rituals for thousands of years.
These skulls were used in halves or in complete form, and were traditionally taken from sky burial sites in which pieces of the deceased’s body were scattered to “target the bird” above.
Tibetan skulls carry a deeply profound meaning, which is the ascension of the soul to another life and cycle of life. The skulls were carefully collected, prepared and consecrated, with rich jewellery, carvings and metalwork used as decoration. Tibetan monasteries would later use the skull as a bowl to hold wine and cakes to offer to the ruling gods.
Today, Tibetan skulls have found their way into the art and style of popular culture, with many of the world’s most famous tattoo artists adapting skulls to create impressive ink interpretation. Displayed on any part of the body the wearer desires, Tibetan skulls are both impressive and significant, with the added knowledge of their origins adding to the rich aesthetics. A wide variety of colors and designs can be applied to create a Tibetan skull tattoo that is unique to each person’s intentions and purposes, and the rules are guided only by love and respect both flesh and spirit.
Tibetan skulls are a reminder that what we create in this life will greatly influence the next, that we are here to learn and respect our fellow human beings, and to share Share blessings as they come. The man with the Tibetan skull tattoo is not ruled by hatred, greed or indulgent passion, but is forced to turn his life into a sacred masterpiece.
