Sister Patricia Terry Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, died on Thursday, July 20, at the age of 81, after a faith-filled life characterized by is commitment, service and testimony. Sister Holland, a former officer in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was recognized for her steadfast support of her husband and their efforts to spread love and light around the world. She is a mother of 3 children, grandmother of 13 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 5 children. Sister Holland, born February 16, 1942, in Enterprise, Utah, to Maeser W. and Marilla Terry, embraced the values and traditions of her pioneer ancestors.
Since leaving the small farming village where she grew up, her faith has seen her through marriage, motherhood, overall Church leadership, recognition of her calling of her husband, and in recent years has shown through illness her courage and character. After Elder Holland left town on Church business one cool fall night in 2014, Sister Holland went to bed at her daughter’s house with a cold. The next morning, she couldn’t breathe. Ms. Holland wondered if she was having a heart attack because she didn’t know what was happening. Her emergency visit was rushed by relatives. She was determined to have a dangerous type of pneumonia a few days later.
Doctors instructed Sister Holland’s husband to gather his family as she was fighting for her life on her hospital bed. The oldest child of Elder and Sister Holland and a General Authority Seventy, Elder Matthew Holland, said, “It was one of the few pivotal moments in the family’s history.” “It suddenly appeared.” He went on to say that the next thirty days were gloomy. “She seemed to be on the brink of life.” Sister Holland received countless blessings, but she did not seem to be making any progress.
