Legendary chess GM Hikaru Nakamura responded to Vladimir Kramnik’s cheating accusations by scoring a resounding victory that shocked the community.
Hikaru went on an impressive winning streak earlier this month, winning 15 games in a row to break Chess.com’s all-time blitz rating record, but not everyone is happy with the Kick streamer.
After his impressive achievement, Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik said that Hikaru had cheated. Hikaru denied the allegations, calling them “rubbish,” but that didn’t stop the world’s top tennis player, Magnus Carlson, from criticizing his opponent on social media.
However, instead of continuing to refute the claims, Hikaru went on the offensive, returning to blitz chess with an astonishing 43-match winning streak. Needless to say, the community was surprised.
GM Hikaru continues to attack after accusations of chess cheating
Hikaru’s November 23rd streak began on Kick.com where he signed a non-exclusive deal and he did not disappoint.
The GM started winning and kept winning and kept winning, with his livestream catching the attention of popular chess YouTuber GothamChess, who called the streak “crazy.” .
“Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura just won 43 consecutive blitz games, livestreamed… he was clearly sending a message regarding Vladimir Kramnik’s recent comments,” he praised.
Users in the comments were equally confused, but many appreciated Nakamura while taking aim at Kramnik for starting the rumor.
“Kramnik has gone off the rails,” said one person speak.
“I hope Hikaru uses this as motivation to finally win his first World Blitz gold medal,” another commented.
That said, not everyone was so happy, with some users even under the impression that the stunt contributed to speculation of cheating.
“I love Hikaru but it’s obviously impossible for him to cheat,” one user commented. “He keeps playing the same people over and over again and they’re not on the same level as him. This is like Kevin Durant playing college players one-on-one and everyone is shocked he wins every game.”
To date, no evidence has been presented that Hikaru cheated in any way, but this is not the first time a chess cheating scandal has shocked the community.
Last year, Hans Niemann was accused of using adult toys to cheat in an over-the-board tournament and defeat Magnus Carlsen.
