Brady was the first African American to hold the position, serving from 1972 to 1997. Paul Lawrence Brady was born in Flint, Michigan, on September 28, 1927. Flint Central High School was where he finished his high school studies.
Xernona’s husband joined the United States Navy after graduating high school. However, he earned degrees from the University of Michigan, Washburn University, and the University of Kansas. Brady also worked as a trial attorney for the Federal Energy Commission, a private practice judge, a hearing examiner for the Social Security Administration, and a private practice attorney. He is also a published author. The civil rights activist wrote a book, A Certain Blindness, about his ancestor’s entry into the United States. Throughout his career, Paul received several civil rights honors.
