Jason Douglas Wright, 52, was found dead in his cell at Yatala Labor Prison in Adelaide’s north on Saturday night. Benjamin Anthony Shuman, 33, was charged with murder. Mr. Shuman did not appear in court for the brief hearing, but his lawyer stated that his client was receiving mental health care. The lawyer informed the judge that his client intended to request bail. The case is expected to return to court in a week. According to David Brown, executive director of the Department of Correctional Services, both men were in custody when the incident took place. “The Remand Center is the main reception center for metropolitan Adelaide,” he said earlier on Monday. “However, after that initial intake and assessment, if someone is detained for a period of time, they will be transferred to a location like Yatala.” Mr Brown stated that a “forensic investigation” will now be conducted into the situation. He added: “An emergency medical alert was issued at Yatala Labor Prison, staff responded to the alert, located the victim and administered emergency first aid immediately. along with the prison’s medical staff.” “Ambulance [crews] responded, but unfortunately their efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.”
After another man was found dead in a high-security prison in Adelaide over the weekend, police have charged a man with murder.
