He is the head of the separatist organization Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). Najjar, 46, was shot dead by two unidentified men on the premises of the gurdwara at 8.27pm local time, around 9am in India on Monday, as he returned home for the day. Surrey, where Nijjar lives, is about 30 kilometers southeast of Vancouver, the largest city in the Western Canadian province of British Columbia. Nijjar moved from Punjab to Canada in 1997, where he worked as a plumber. He got married in the North American country and has two sons. He is the president of the Surrey Gurdwara organization since 2020. Nijjar belongs to Bhar Singh Pura village in Pillaur subdivision of Jalandhar district. His parents visited the village before the first Covid-19 lockdown.

According to the Indian government, as the leader of KTF, Nijjar was actively involved in the operation and networking of the organization as well as training and funding of its members. He is said to have visited Pakistan in 2013-14 to meet Jagtar Singh Tara, who is currently serving a life sentence in India for his involvement in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. Tara escaped from prison in 2004 but was recaptured in Thailand in 2015 and brought back to India. Najjar is also friendly with Dal Khalsa leader Rajinder Singh, one of the five hijackers of an Indian Airlines flight in 1981. Rajinder Singh is currently in Pakistan.

NIA has announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for Nijjar. His name was on the wanted list that former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had given to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the latter’s visit to India in 2018. Najjar was named in the FIR posted by the NIA signed in December 2020 when farmers protested against the three farm laws in Delhi. Najjar, along with Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and Paramjit Singh Pamma, was charged with conspiring to create an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness, sowing discontent among the people and inciting them to revolt against the Government of India.
