Starting at the age of four, Huw Edwards grew up in Llangennech, near Llanelli. His date of birth was 18 August 1961 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales, to a Welsh-speaking family. Hywel Teifi Edwards, his father, was a professor of Welsh-language literary studies at University College, Swansea, as well as a Welsh language activist and a tartan Cymru. He is also a scholar and an author. Ewdwards’ mother, Aerona Protheroe, spent 30 years teaching at Ysgol Gyfun y Strade in Llanelli. His only sister is Meinir.

He attended University College, Cardiff, after studying at Llanelli Boys’ Grammar School, gaining a first-class honors degree in French in 1983. A television producer, Vicky Flind, who worked on shows such as This Week and Peston, is married to Edwards. The couple live in Dulwich, London and have five children.
