Rizz, the word popularized by Twitch star Kai Cenat, has been crowned Word of the Year 2023 by Oxford University Press. Yes, seriously.
As streaming and content creation has become a true career path for several online personalities as they have managed to create large followings across a number of different platforms.
Naturally, these communities create their own jokes and phrases for reference in broadcasts and videos. For example, you can’t tune into an xQc stream without hearing multiple references to ‘The Juice’.
However, Kai Cenat and the AMP team tried to go one step further. They’ve popularized the word ‘Rizz’ over the past year or two – a shortened term for charisma and the way people have personality when trying to talk to someone.

The word has spread so much over the past year that, thanks to Merriam-Webster, it’s even appearing in the dictionary alongside similar phrases like Simp, NGL, and Bussin.
On top of that, Rizz was even named the 2023 word of the year by Oxford University Press.
This popular phrase has beaten out other breakout phrases like Parasocial, Swiftie – yes, referring to Taylor Swift fans, Beige Flag and Situationship. All of which we have seen increase on social media platforms like X and TikTok.
Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, thinks Rizz is “the prevailing mood of 2023, where more of us are opening up after a challenging few years and finding confidence in who we are.” “, according to the BBC.
It follows last year’s winner, Goblin Mode, as another popular internet phrase becomes part of everyday life – and it will be interesting to see what wins next year.
