The name of Mahatma Gandhi exists as a permanent impression not only in the minds of the Indian public but all over the world. January 13th has a deep connection with Gandhiji. He began his fast unto death on 13 January 1948 in Calcutta (now Calcutta) in the face of communal madness arising from the tragedy of Partition. It was attended by thousands of people, including large numbers of Hindus and Sikhs, and many refugees from Pakistan.

1948: Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi began a fast unto death in Calcutta, the last fast of his life, to maintain unity between Hindus and Muslims.
1964: Violent communal riots between Hindus and Muslims in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, leave at least 100 dead and more than 400 injured.
1972: Ghana’s Prime Minister was overthrown in a bloodless coup. The military commander holds command of the country.
1993: The US and its allies conducted air strikes to establish a no-fly zone in southern Iraq.
2001: An earthquake occurred in the Central American city of San Salvador. More than 1,000 people are expected to die.
2006: Britain rules out the possibility of a military attack on Iran’s nuclear program.
2010: Due to the international financial crisis, the German economy contracted by 5% in 2009. This was said to be the largest decline since World War II.
2012: The passenger ship Costa Concordia sank off the coast of Italy. Of the 4,232 passengers and crew on board, 15 people died.
