Austin Harrouff News
A judge determined on Monday that the alleged murderer Austin Harrouff is not responsible for the 2016 killings of a Tequesta couple at their house on Southeast Kokomo Lane in southern Martin County due to insanity.
John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, were fatally stabbed by Harrouff, 25, in a savage and random attack that also hurt their neighbour Jeffrey Fisher, who tried to aid the pair.
At the time, Harrouff was a 19-year-old Florida State University student. When Stevens’ face was discovered being bit and chewed on in the driveway, authorities discovered what seemed to be flesh in Harrouff’s teeth. Harrouff was allegedly targeting Stevens III and Mishcon while on his way to his father’s house in the neighbourhood, according to deputies.
According to records, the magnitude of Stevens III’s and Mishcon’s numerous injuries caused them to pass away soon, according to the medical examiner who conducted the autopsies on them. Investigators found that to restrain Harrouff, a significant amount of force, including the use of a Taser, a police dog, and numerous law enforcement personnel, was required.

Early on in the trial, his defence team made it clear they would ask for an insanity defence acquittal. In order for that to happen, Harrouff had to persuade the judge that he was incapable of understanding the repercussions of his acts, didn’t know what he was doing at the time of the murders, or didn’t know it was wrong.
Two psychologists, one employed by the government and the other by the defence, have determined that Harrouff was having a “acute psychotic episode” when the murders were committed.
According to the doctors, Harrouff was “unable to distinguish right from wrong,” which means he satisfies Florida’s requirements to be exonerated due to insanity. Before making his decision, Circuit Judge Sherwood Bauer listened to nearly two hours of remarks from the relatives of Stevens and Mishcon, some of whom were angry and devastated. They frequently addressed Harrouff directly as he sat unmoving with three defence lawyers.
Cindy Mishcon, Michelle Mishcon’s sister, began by reading aloud the countless numbers of text messages that Harrouff had written to college friends and a girlfriend in the months preceding the killings. He frequently made remarks about being so inebriated that he was about to pass out and about using drugs almost every day.
She seemed to get agitated as she read more of the texts, occasionally raising her voice as she spoke to Harrouff. She also detailed the substance of multiple recorded phone calls Harrouff made to family members while he was in jail, in which she claimed he appeared to denigrate Stevens III and Mishcon and downplay his involvement in the killings.
