Trying to pick the best video games of all time is a task defined by one word: hubris.

How could anyone possibly make a definitive list of gaming’s greatest achievements when there is such an incredibly wide variety of games to choose from? That’s the question we kept asking ourselves when we decided to compile our own Top 50 list. It was the kind of task that we could split up hundreds of ways, coming up with completely different lists each time based on our preferred methodology. It’s a testament to the rich history of gaming, which offers a myriad of diverse experiences worthy of praise.

So it may seem silly to try to reduce that rich landscape to a short list. While we may have agreed when we embarked on this ambitious project, months of discussion among the Digital Trends team proved to be more valuable than we could have ever imagined.
