What’s the difference between fabric softener and dryer sheets?

Iamnao/Shutterstock. My bottle of Downy fabric softener boasts that it is “better together” with dryer sheets (Downy brand, of course). I know a lot of people who use one or the other, or neither, but not many people who use both. This is probably because many people are not sure if they do different things.

Both fabric softener and dryer sheets add fragrance and softness and reduce creases and interference, they work slightly differently and don’t have exactly the same results. “Fabric conditioner is introduced during the wash cycle and penetrates the actual fibers of the fabric to condition and protect clothing from stretching, fading and gassing, while dryer sheets are activated by the heat in the dryer and work on the surface to fight wrinkles and static,”, explains Mary Johnson, P&G Fabric Care Scientist. “Think of fabric conditioner as a conditioner that you apply to your hair after shampooing, and dryer sheets as a finishing hairspray that you apply after you’re done styling.”

They sound like wonderful benefits, but not everyone is so enthusiastic about them. Cleaning expert Jolie Kerr actually thinks fabric softener belongs in one of Dante’s circles of hell. There are definitely some fabrics that don’t mix well with liquid. Coating towels, microfibers and sports equipment with conditioner makes them less effective. Towels won’t absorb well, microfiber won’t collect dust well, and your gym clothes won’t wick away sweat properly. Softener bottles also have a warning about using it on children’s sleepwear because it reduces flame resistance. It can similarly affect fabrics like fleece and chenille. Vinegar offers an alternative for things like towels. It can also soften fabric and reduce static electricity.

Unfortunately, one softener does not appear to be available. Sofft was a 2014 Kickstarter project that promised to make it almost impossible to wash your clothes anymore, as it turned your regular closet into clothes that repel stains when you add them to the laundry cycle. Imagine how naturally soft your jeans would become if you didn’t have to throw them in the washing machine for months.
