NU.nl visited the IJsbeeldenfestival in Zwolle, the Netherlands. This is the story as depicted in 275,000 pounds of snow and ice art. Also, the less pleasant sides of history come to the fore, for example, the sculpture of the concentration camp. Is this home on a golf outing?
very Small groups of people walking along the high ijsbeelden in bitterkoude hall, in the city of Zwolle. As the temperature is below 12 degrees Celsius, it is cold enough to freeze you to death.
From the entrance to the visitors walk in prehistoric times, giant dinosaurs of ice and snow with bare teeth. Then in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the modern age, then in the future.

IJsbeelden from heksenverbranding to the Holocaust The IJsbeeldenfestival shies away from the dark side of history. Professionally crafted crystal clear ice paintings depicting the fourteenth century bubonic plague that broke out in Europe, heksenverbranding and the beheading of Marie-Antoinette.
One of the largest and most disturbing images is that of a legless Jewish prisoner in a concentration camp, complete with a streepjespak and a Star of David on his chest.
Is this still a suitable picture for a light family outing? “There is not always peace and harmony in history,” says organizer Eric Broekaart. “This is a topic for which you show your ugly side.”

History represents “black pages”.
the organization was, therefore, indisputable, that the Holocaust was also the place where the festival should have received it. However, the text on the door, the door is still gesoebat. At the moment there is no ‘Arbeit macht frei’, but ‘so that they don’t forget us’. “In this way, the picture will not go to a specific camp, but to the prison camp all over the world,” Broekaart explains to za.
The idea of the camp is a life-size statue of Anne Frank, standing behind her desk and writing in her diary. “Great,” says an elderly visitor on a mobility scooter. “You could put it in a future history exhibit for this show,” he says. “I have a few more things I want to see, but it’s damn cold in here.”
“Perhaps this picture has a warning posted for everyone.” Visitor of the IJsbeeldenfestival
A woman who is visiting the festival with her two children is in doubt. “We’re just here to have a nice dinner and a show. For those with a family history of war, and, perhaps, painfully in this picture, suddenly,” she says. “Maybe they’re a warning that you can put them right in front of you to get here.”
Shortly after ijsbeelden on war events the point goes to the route of the pictures read. We will see the release and fall of the Berlin Wall and the famous broederkus), and the emergence of punk, the latest in the railway-train, and the arrival of the first humans on Mars.
“There are two to four weeks forty-ijscarvers with blood, sweat and tears, worked to make these paintings,” said Broekaart. “I hope this is a real party to enjoy and be excited about.”
