dcwcreations / Shutterstock After T-Mobile became the third largest carrier in the US, Sprint is fighting back by offering customers the chance to roam at no additional cost. Sprint’s Open World is a clear response to T-Mobile’s Mobile without Borders, which debuted last month.
Open World is a free add-on that includes free calling and texting to Canada and Mexico. The plan also offers free unlimited calls and texts, as well as 1GB of 3G data, when you travel to Canada, Mexico and Latin America. 1GB of data exceeds your domestic data allowance and excess will be billed at a rate of $30/GB. Users will only be charged for their actual usage.
Travelers to other countries still get free text messages, but will have to pay 20 cents per minute for calls. Data will cost $30/GB, but again, Sprint will only charge for data used.
Plus, US customers can call Latin America, the Dominican Republic and more than 180 countries for just 5 cents per minute.
T-Mobile or Sprint?
It’s great to have a choice, especially for those who love to travel. As with all carrier plans and offers, each has its pros and cons, and it’s up to users to decide what’s best for them.
Both plans offer free calling and texting to Canada and Mexico, so we’ll call it a draw.
Sprint offers 1GB of roaming data, which is in addition to whatever plan you’re on. On the other hand, T-Mobile allows you to use your monthly data space in roaming without additional costs. Open World is a better option for those with limited data plans, while Mobile without Borders makes sense for those with higher data plans as these users have the option of using more than 1GB of roaming data without paying extra.
Both Sprint and T-Mobile include Canada and Mexico in roaming, but Sprint also includes Latin America. This may or may not matter to you depending on where you are traveling.
Then there’s the whole CDMA vs. GSM issue. T-Mobile is a GSM carrier and might offer better coverage, while Sprint’s CDMA isn’t as popular. The growth of LTE is closing the gap though.
There are also slight differences for those of you who make a lot of calls to countries other than Canada and Mexico. Sprint’s 5 cents per minute for 180+ countries is a good deal, but T-Mobile offers unlimited calling to landlines in 70+ countries for $10 a month. Users can also sign up for unlimited calls to mobile phones in over 30 countries for an additional $5 ($15 total). It all comes down to how many phone calls you plan to make.
