An Australian man is being criticized on TikTok after filming himself walking through a women-only train carriage in Japan.

In a 21-second TikTok video that has attracted 2.2 million views, vlogger ShearingShedVlogs wants to share something “shocking” [him] as an Australian in Japan.

Tourists recorded themselves boarding a women-only train carriage, with large pink signs written in English and Japanese. “It’s like Saudi Arabia here,” he said, looking unimpressed.

As he walked past the car, he filmed several female passengers who seemed a bit uncomfortable with his presence. “I’m a female inspector, checking to see if there are only women in this carriage,” the TikToker says in the clip.

“This ‘women only’ carriage is the last thing I expected to see in a free country like Japan,” he wrote in the video caption, adding and reminding him of what he will find “in a country with strict segregation rules.”

The controversial clip has since sparked outrage on TikTok and other social media platforms, with many criticizing the tourists as trespassing and comparing women-only train carriages to racial discrimination.

One user wrote: “This is not about discrimination but about the safety of women and people like you are the reason they exist.” “You have bad manners for not respecting Japanese traditions, you’re embarrassing yourself,” another said.

“How dare you violate the safe space for women. You don’t even know about the sexual harassment suffered? It’s like a toilet, avoid going out,” another person added.

Sexual harassment on Japanese trains, also known as “chikan,” continues to be a persistent problem in the country. According to a 2019 survey conducted by Japan Broadcasting Corporation, it was reported that 47.9% of women polled had been touched inappropriately on a train.
