Alex Marsh, 21, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder after being accused of accidentally suffocating his six-month-old daughter.
On September 21, Marsh pleaded no contest to second-degree murder before Midland County District Court Judge Michael Beale. Previous charges of first-degree murder and child abuse were dropped.
He will then be sentenced on November 16, 2023 and jailed for a minimum of 13 and a half years.
Despite the death of Marsh’s daughter, the prosecution team does not believe that he intentionally killed her.
The man will have to spend a minimum of 13 and a half years in prison for suffocating his daughter
According to Midland Daily News, Marsh allegedly placed a 4-pound blanket on his 6-month-old daughter Scarlett on the night of May 17, 2022. This action contributed to her death from suffocation. while supposedly playing video games.
“This is an extremely sad and deeply unfortunate case,” said Midland County District Attorney J. Dee Brooks. “We feel the defendant lacks the maturity and ability to provide adequate child care.”
On May 17, 2022, Marsh drove his then-wife Isabelle to work on her 10pm to 6am shift. Isabelle recalls the baby was not in the car when Marsh came to pick her up the next day. After returning home, she discovered her lifeless baby lying in the crib. At first she thought the baby was sick.
After Marsh’s arrest, investigators noticed several “inconsistencies” regarding the order of events. For example, Marsh claimed that he checked the crib at some point during the night. However, he later retracted that statement in a subsequent interview.
This is not the only video game-related crime involving children to date. For example, a woman shot her 17-year-old son multiple times during a heated argument over a video game console. Luckily, the child survived multiple bullet wounds.
