An argument over the loud volume of a video game led to a shooting that left three police officers injured in the exchange of fire.
A man is dead and three officers are injured after an argument over a rowdy video game ended in a shooting in Northeast Philadelphia.
Authorities were called to a home Wednesday after a 12-year-old boy called police to report that his father, Michael Hwang, had shot his uncle following a dispute. The boy was allegedly arguing with his father about the volume of a video game when his uncle walked in and things escalated.
Hwang, wearing a ballistic vest and armed with a Glock pistol, allegedly waited at the front door for police to arrive before opening fire on them.
A gunfight ensued until Hwang was seriously injured. Acting Police Commissioner John Stanford told The Associated Press that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two officers and a sergeant were injured in the shooting but are expected to recover. The uncle was hospitalized in critical condition, but the son and a woman were able to leave the house without injury.
According to FOX 29, Hwang was known to the police department and was “mentally ill.” Just last month, he was found ‘not guilty’ on two criminal charges after shooting in the backyard of the same property.
“It’s amazing, I thank God that (the officers) are okay. I thank them for their courage and desire to do this very difficult job and I thank their families for the sacrifice they have made,” said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.
Responding to the news on Twitter, one person wrote: “These senseless crimes must stop.”
