Sathianathan is a Malaysian football coach and player. His last coaching role was with Sarawak United in the Malaysia Super League, having previously coached the Malaysia national football team and the under-23 team.

He once played with NSCRC (Negeri Sembilan Chinese Recreation Club) as a player in the attacking midfielder position. He was also a member of the Malaysian team that won the bronze medal at the 1983 Sea Games. He became the captain of Negeri Sembilan as a center back in 1988. He coached Negeri Sembilan FA early in his coaching career mine. From 1997-1999 to 2002-2004, he served as assistant coach for the national Olympic team. He was also assistant head coach at MPPJ FC from 2006 until the club folded and briefly served as interim head coach after Michael Feinchtenbeiner resigned. He was selected by the Malaysian Football Association in 2006 to be the head coach of the Malaysia U23 team to prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics qualifiers.
Sathianathan once again brought Malaysia to the final, at the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup. However, in the last two matches, his team lost 2-3 to Vietnam and was defeated 0-3 by host Thailand. For the first time in 1998, Thais saw Malaysia eliminated from the group stage. Rumors also spread that he would be replaced by former Indonesia coach Peter Withe because of his failures. However, FAM decided to extend his contract for another year on the condition that he improve Malaysia’s FIFA ranking. He was appointed manager of ATM FA in November 2011.
Under Sathianathan’s leadership, ATM won the 2012 Malaysia Premier League and was automatically promoted to the 2013 Malaysia Super League. He was successful in maintaining ATM as a Super League Team for 3 seasons and also reached finalist of the 2013 Malaysia Cup until relieved of his duties in April 2015. In February 2017, Sathianathan was announced as the new head coach of Felda United FC. Under his guidance, Felda won 3rd place in the 2017 Malaysia Super League and reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Malaysia Cup. He won the Super League best coach award that season.
