Before earning her nursing diploma from Lutheran School of Nursing in 2008, she studied at Harris–Stowe State University for one year, i.e. from 1995 to 1996. Bush founded the Kingdom Embassy International Church in St. Louis. Louis, Missouri in 2011. After the unrest in Ferguson in 2014 when she worked as a nurse and triage organizer, she began to develop her interest in politics. In 2018, Bush launched a campaign against incumbent Democratic representative Lacy Clay in Missouri’s 1st congressional district. She and her campaign were featured in the 2019 Netflix documentary Knock Down the House, about her first primary challenge to Clay. In 2020, Bush faced Clay again. And that same year, she narrowly defeated Clay in the primary election in what was widely considered an upset. Bush received 48.5% of the vote, winning the City of St. Louis and narrowly lost in suburban St. Louis County. Louis. The district is so heavily Democratic that in November her primary victory was considered the equivalent of an election. Her primary victory ended the Clay family’s 52 years of holding the district. No Republican has received more than 40% in the district since the late 1940s.
Bush joined “The Squad”, a group of progressive Democratic lawmakers, shortly after being sworn into office. Bush introduced a resolution to remove every Republican who supported the effort to overturn the 2020 US presidential election from the House of Representatives, hours after pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol, on January 6, 2021. Bush called the attack on the Capitol a “White supremacist insurrection” incited by a “white supremacist president,” while declared support for the second impeachment of Donald Trump. She is also a progressive Democrat, supporting policies such as criminal justice and police reform, abortion rights, Medicare for all, a $15 minimum wage, college and Vocational schools offer free tuition, as well as debt forgiveness for students.
