Coromandel Express speed limit 130 km/h
Coromandel Express was plying towards Chennai when it was affected on Friday. On Sunday, Railways confirmed that the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express met with an accident in Balasore district. It added that a freight train hit another passenger train and collided. Jaya Varma Sinha, member of the Railway Board’s Executive and Business Development Committee, cited after a preliminary inquiry that the board had ruled out speeding charges. Jaya Varma Sinha went on to say that some interference in the signaling system could have led to the accident that has killed 275 people so far. The number of casualties is making this accident India’s worst train tragedy in the past three decades. Sinha added: “Only one train met with an accident, the Coromandel Express. The Coromandel Express crashed into a freight train and its carriages jumped on top of the freight train. Talking about the speed limit of trains, the Ministry of Railways said that no train was running above the speed limit, both running within the limit of 130 km/h in the area. The council added that “some interference with the system” could lead to accidents. Both Coromandel Express and Yesvantpur Express ran at speeds of 128 km/h and 126 km/h respectively.
