Dan Blocker was born on December 10, 1928, in De Kalb, Bowe County, Texas, to Ora “Shack” Blocker and Mary Arizona Blocker. He was a Free Methodist who was reared in Texas. He went to Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Dan played football for Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, which is connected with the Southern Baptist Convention.
In 1947, Dan enrolled at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas. He was a standout football player there and graduated in 1950. He pursued his master’s degree in dramatic arts after two years in military administration.

From 1953 to 1958, Blocker taught senior school English and dramatization in Sonora, Texas; afterward, he was a 6th-grade educator and mentor at Eddy Elementary School in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and a teacher in California. Prior to that, he worked as a rodeo entertainment and a bouncer at a nightclub as an understudy. Blocker was enlisted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He received foundational training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Actor Blocker played the part of The Goon in Outer Space Jitters.
Blocker played Cloudy Sims, a whiskery poker-playing rodeo entertainer, in the 1958 scene “Rodeo” on Richard Diamond, Private Detective, where a rodeo entertainer named Ed Murdock, played by Lee Van Cleef, is killed before he can make his final execution at the yearly event in Madison Square Garden. Blocker played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright in the television series Bonanza in 1959. Before his death, he appeared in 415 episodes of the show. In 1963, Blocker co-starred with Frank Sinatra in the parody Come Blow Your Horn. In 1968, he re-teamed with Sinatra in Lady in Cement, portraying a menacingly focused character.
Blocker appeared in the 1970 film Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico Country. In addition, he appeared on The Flip Wilson program, a comedy program. While managing scenes for Bonanza, Chief Robert Altman gets acquainted with Blocker. He cast Blocker as Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye, but Blocker died before filming began. Blocker”; three relatives, his father, mother, and sister, are buried near to him.
