Delhi jails have hidden mobile phone detection devices

Ten non-linear splice detectors have been purchased by Delhi Jail to search jails for hidden mobile phones and metal. The device can find things embedded up to 2 feet deep into concrete or the ground. The device costs 1.5 crore to buy from a US-based company. After a robber was killed in Tihar jail, the jail authorities decided to remove dangerous items from the cells. Sanjay Baniwal, director general of Delhi Jail, verified the development and announced the purchase of 10 mobile phones and metal object detectors. “To improve the work efficiency of correctional officers, we are providing them with advanced technology. According to a senior prison official, these detectors can even find objects buried up to 2 feet below the surface of soil or concrete.

“In 2021, we ordered two non-linear splice detectors which we tested. The conclusion was so satisfactory that the Ministry decided to order additional equipment from a company based in the United States. According to the official, the device can detect metal, SIM cards and mobile phones through concrete that can be buried up to 2 feet deep. The department spent ₹1.5 crore on 10 devices, each costing ₹15 lakh. The total capacity of three jails in Delhi Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini is 10,026 prisoners. However, according to officials, there are currently 2,165 prisoners and 17,906 undertrial prisoners (UTP) being detained at these three facilities.
