A frustrated delivery driver has TikTok viewers divided after taking back a customer’s groceries because they didn’t tip the $400 order.
In a viral clip with 2.5 million views, a delivery driver is filmed engaging in a heated exchange with a couple over a tip for a large grocery order.
“You should see how much effort this job takes and why I have to get a tip because of how much effort this job is,” the driver said, emphasizing the importance of tips, while customers still maintain the view that it is optional.
One of them told the worker: “No, you don’t deserve a tip, you’re crushing ramen noodles for a penny. The disappointed driver replied that it didn’t matter because she would return all the belongings.
“They’re not for you anymore,” she said while placing the groceries back in her car. “I had to pack all of this in the car and bring it to you guys and then unpack it. You didn’t pay me. You paid for the delivery app.”
One of the customers then accused the driver of stealing their food, to which the delivery driver replied: “You guys can get a refund and another delivery driver can deal with you.” .
The argument lasted several minutes and ended with the worker continuing to load groceries into his cart, while one of the customers vowed to “report it.”
TikTok users had mixed reactions to the video, with some siding with the driver. “Always tip. People who say ‘Tipping is optional’ are broke,” one viewer commented. “No tip? Goodbye girl, I’m going with the driver,” another person added. “$400 AND NO TIP? I’m with her,” another shared.
Others defended customers, arguing that tipping is optional. “OPTIONAL TIP!!! America has already lost, we hope consumers pay workers, it’s not our job to pay people!” one user wrote.
“Tipping is optional! When people ask for tips, I KNOW I’m making the right decision not to tip,” said another. “Yes, it sucks not to tip a $400 order BUT she really didn’t have to,” a third added.
