His full name is Eduardo Alvarez. He was born on January 30, 1990 to Mabel and Walter Alvarez. His parents are Cuban immigrants. He spent his childhood in Miami and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School. Alvarez has an older brother, Nick. He played professional baseball for seven years, reaching the Triple-A level. He also has a sister, Nicole, who is a radio DJ in Los Angeles for KROQ FM.

Alvarez became interested in skating when he was given a pair of plastic roller skates at the age of 5. He realized he had talent and passion for this sport. He learned how to perform various tricks to show off to the weekend crowds in South Beach. His coach, Bob Manning, introduced him to the ice when he was 7 years old. At age 11, “Eddy the Jet” was the title by which he became famous. He won the triple crown – national age-level titles not only in inline speed skating but also in long track speed skating and short track speed skating.
He fell in love with his other love, baseball during his high school days. Despite this, he remembered his dream of competing at the Olympics and left it after school to return to skating.

Skating career
He won the World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championship in 2008 and 2009, where he won the gold medal in the 3000 meter relay at the 2009 tournament. Due to poor health, he placed seventh at the Olympic Trials 2010 and was absent from the team.
During the 2011 season, Alvarez joined the Salt Lake Community College baseball team. He played brilliantly there but his knee was not good. The doctor advised that Alvarez had multiple patellar tendon tears in both knees.
He had surgery on his knee and he admitted that it was scary. His father convinced Alvarez to endure and by July, Alvarez was ready to return to the national team. When he returned to the national team, things were chaotic and had to go through a lot of stress due to the head coach. Alvarez’s muscles were so weak after surgery that he couldn’t even walk a set of stairs without guidance.
By December 2012, Alvarez had improved enough to be suitable for the World Cup team. He participated in the 2013 US National Championships in January. There, he placed 4th on the American team. In the 2013–14 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, he won a gold medal (in Kolomna) and a silver medal (in Seoul). He then won a bronze medal (in Shanghai) in the 500 meters.
Olympic
Alvarez placed second in the 2014 Winter Olympic Trials in the 1,500 meters and second place in the 500 meters. This guaranteed him a place on the Olympic team. He was the first Cuban-American male speed skater to make the US Olympic team.
He faced many difficulties at the Olympics, but Alvarez completed excellently when he and his teammates won the silver medal in the 5,000 meter relay final, finishing 0.271 seconds behind Russia.
Baseball career
Alvarez signed with The Chicago White Sox to a minor league contract on June 11, 2014. He made his professional appearances with the Arizona White Sox of the rookie-level Arizona League. He was then elevated to the Kannapolis Intimidators of the Class A South Atlantic League on August 12, 2014.
In May 2021, Alvarez was selected to the United States national baseball team. He qualified to participate in baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics. On July 21, he was chosen as the flag bearer for the United States in the opening ceremony of the Olympics alongside basketball player Sue Bird. Alvarez is the first baseball player chosen as a flag bearer for the United States. The baseball team went on to win the silver medal, but lost to Japan in the gold medal match. Alvarez became the 135th athlete to compete in both the Winter and Summer Olympics and only the sixth athlete to win medals in both the Winter and Summer Olympics.
