A former Amish on TikTok shared that some current members of the Amish were “shunned” after the US Emergency Alert went off on phones they had smuggled into the community.
In most, if not all, Amish communities across the United States, members of the community cannot have modern technology such as cars, computers, and cell phones.
But what happens if you smuggle cell phones and the United States decides to send out a nationwide emergency alert test without being able to find out about it in advance?
TikToker and former Amish church member Eli Yoder revealed on October 4, 2023, that nationwide testing that same day had “alienated” some members of the community.
Amish members shunned after US emergency warning inspection
“Some Amish men have been shunned by the Amish Church for leaving their smartphones in their pockets when the emergency alert system goes off,” he said.
Eli went on to explain that on the day of the EAS test in the US, three of them responded to Eli that they would have to pause for a while due to getting caught in the equipment.
“One guy said the elders were coming to his driveway and they were there to talk to him about something they heard about him, that he might have to be shunned. Just as that was happening, the alarm went off and it was in his pocket,” Yoder explained.
“Now he is shunned by both,” the former Amish man added. Whatever they want to do to stay away from him and the cell phone.”
Shunning can vary by Amish sect, but Amishbaskets says that shunning “involves a person being painfully separated from their community.”
After being shunned, that person will no longer be able to eat, drink or walk with other members of the community.
