Iconic rappers Nas and Mass appeal Creative director Sacha Jenkins is teaming up with Showtime ahead of hip-hop’s 50th birthday for three years of programming.
They’ll be getting ready for the “world’s biggest birthday party” by focusing on some of the best and most entertaining stories to come from the genre’s first 50 years. Check out the first trailer below.
Based on DiversityNas and Jenkins (Producer/director of Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men) will focus on the culture, key players and stories within the firebrand musical style that will develop through scripted programming, digital media, ensembles and documentaries.
Some projects have been locked hip Hop 50 include:
- Hits from Bong – check out West Coast rap
- Push it – focuses on women in hip-hop
- Rolling like thunder – graffiti and street art details
- Untitled Ralph McDaniels Project – a look back at the iconic show Video music box
- Ricky Powell: Individualist – profile of the great rap photographer
“There are so many more stories,” Nas said Diversity. “I’m opening this up, but HipHop 50 is a multi-layered initiative, created by Mass appeal [in partnership with CBS Viacom]and we built this platform to make sure the celebration of hip-hop is celebrated in a way that’s truly iconic and that everyone should be a part of it.
“This is something that’s going to happen that we don’t want to brush off as a small thing. This is the biggest birthday in the world. You’ll see stories from every aspect of hip-hop, whether it’s street stories, whether it’s MCs. No matter what, we want to celebrate and push this birthday party to the maximum.”
hip hip 50 will launch later this year and run until 2023 for the genre’s 50th birthday.
