A former McDonald’s chef has explained why the company loves the viral Grimace Shake trend, even if it seems “negative” to many viewers.
If you scrolled through TikTok at any point from late June onwards, chances are you’ll come across the Grimace Shake trend. The strange trend arose after McDonald’s decision to celebrate the famous purple character’s 52nd birthday.
In some videos, they went to the local McDonald’s, bought drinks and pretended they had committed a crime in Grimace’s name. Elsewhere, customers pretend to be dead, as if they were poisoned by Grimace for taking a sip of his drink.
Because many of the videos were shot like horror movie scenes, some viewers praised its creativity. However, others are wary that it could be seen as negative. Ultimately, it is the success of the fast food brand.
McDonald’s “loves” the Grimace Shake trend even if it is “negative”
According to former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz, they actually “loved it” and were “so happy” that it went viral – even if it had “negative” connotations.
“For proof, you can go on their social media, look at their social media people – Marketing, TikTok – go on LinkedIn and there are a lot of people at McDonald’s talking about how great it is ,” Haracz said in an October 10 TikTok.
“Every major brand would want something like this to happen, even a negative one, as long as the brand does not participate in or support negative actions.”
Haracz is associated with the classic Szechuan Sauce moments in Rick and Morty, which prompted McDonald’s to bring that back a few years ago.
At the end of the day, trends drive sales and refill McDonald’s accounts, so they’ll be pretty happy about that – especially for a product that’s only in limited production. Even so, employees quickly grew tired of this trend.
