Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen nightmare revolves around saving restaurants that appear to be sinking, but a heated exchange between an owner and a chef leads him to deliver a brutal ultimatum.
The reboot of Chef Ramsay’s FOX show aims to open doors for struggling businesses across the United States, many of which are family restaurants.
In episode 3, the brutally honest host went to a luxury golf resort and visited a place called In The Drink, in Wayne, New Jersey. The business is $250,000 in debt and the owners don’t talk enough about finances, leaving Jorge’s wife in the dark about its bleak future.
When Gordon arrived, he couldn’t even see the name of the place on the outside and after passing through the entrance he described it as “incomplete” in design – spotting an area that had yet to be paint.
The warning signs were there from the start, with loyal employees saying the owner never actually worked there and hid in the office. Even when Gordon arrived, he chose not to go out for a long time and the food was hardly impressive.
Gordon Ramsay has given the owners of Amy’s Baking Company style an ultimatum
After taking a back seat to see how the kitchen performed for a day, Ramsay decided he needed to completely shut down dinner service, calling it a “disaster.” Some meat dishes served were still cold.
As guests left and staff left the area, the Hell’s Kitchen star took off his gloves to get into a heated argument with owner Jorge about how the venue was run.
“Carlos (the chef) was on his knees,” he said. He tried for three weeks without a day off. Do you understand what that guy is going through? You can’t beat them seven nights a week like you don’t care.”
FOXJorge said Gordon’s honest response was a sobering wake-up call.
Jorge started speaking louder and replied: “You don’t understand. You are not listening.” He was soon called “a liar” by Ramsay. “You’ve been watching this for years. You asked me to help but I cannot help you if you cannot help yourself.”
The owner then confronted him: “What you’re doing is coming in and screaming…” And then gave a series of excuses for the restaurant’s failures.
“I came here to do a job,” Gordon said. So far, you’re ignoring all the obvious things. Do you think I’m lying or will you listen?
The FOX star later held a staff meeting and explained that he would not fight the employer he came to help, saying “Am I in or am I out?”
FOXGordon Ramsay has clashed with many Kitchen Nightmares owners, but he doesn’t often threaten to quit the episode.
If he chooses to abandon the owner, In The Drink will join Amy’s Baking Company and several others from history’s greatest episodes in pushing him to the brink. Most of the time, Ramsay is by their side, helping to create menus, redecorate and make a difference in their fortunes.
Luckily for Jorge, he decided to continue the mission and within a short period of time, In The Drink was packed with VIPs and influencers to reopen.
The restaurant, based at the Preakness Valley Golf Course, remained open after the episode and has a 4.2 rating on Google. Who knows what will happen if things boil over and Gordon leaves earlier than expected – a close call for the establishment.
