On November 20, chess grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik accused Hikaru of cheating in an extremely confusing Chess.com profile update. The accusation came not long after Hikaru broke Chess.com’s lightning ratings record.
Stunned by the “rubbish” accusations, Hikaru quickly denied them, but that didn’t stop other chess players from agreeing with their thoughts. Magnus Carlsen also joined the controversy by criticizing Hikaru for a recent mistake.
