During his career, Tane Norton played a total of 661 matches including 27 for the All Blacks which he played between 1971 and 1977. In 1977, in the fourth test series against the Lions England and Ireland were touring, Tane Norton led his country’s team nine times. Former All Blacks team-mate Billy Bush reflected on the adventures he shared with Tane Norton, “There was definitely a need for leadership. I’m very proud of him, a Māori and captain. Just being attached to him, it was a really proud time in my life. A very humble guy, has a happy family. He is a wonderful family man.” At the age of 19, Norton debuted for Mid Canterbury in 1961 but he did not gain fame and prominence until joining Christchurch club Linwood in 1969. In 1971, Norton made his debut for the All Blacks against the British Lions and Ireland, starting a run of 27 consecutive Test appearances.
