If you are not a fan of Telegram’s stories feature, there are ways you can block it.
Stories have become a staple feature in most messaging and social media platforms. Telegram introduced stories in 2023. According to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, this was in response to users’ constant requests for the feature to be included.

But not everyone wants stories, and unlike Signal, Telegram currently doesn’t have a function that allows you to turn off stories in the app. However, there is still a way to block messages on Telegram.
1. Delete synchronized contacts
Stories posted on Telegram can be set up to be shared only with people in your contact list, close friends among your contacts, certain users (including groups and channel) or to everyone on Telegram as a public feed on your profile. Stories posted by your contacts will be displayed at the top of the home screen. For this reason, keeping your contacts out of Telegram’s reach will prevent you from seeing any stories they post.
The process is a bit more complicated than on WhatsApp. With WhatsApp, blocking contact access will automatically stop status updates. You can read more in our guide on how to block status feature on WhatsApp.
However, Telegram keeps your contacts stored in its servers to allow you to view them on any device. This means that blocking contact access in Settings will not immediately block Telegram stories as long as your contacts are saved in the cloud.

- To get started, you need to delete the contacts that Telegram has synced. Click the hamburger icon (three bar) next to Telegram on the home screen.
- Open Settings > Privacy and security.
- Scroll down to Contacts.
- Select Delete Synced Contacts and turn off Sync Contacts.
- Then, navigate to Telegram’s App information. Select Contacts from the App Permissions list and select Do not allow.
This solution has certain disadvantages. You will stop receiving notifications from Telegram when people in your contact list join the platform. There won’t be names in your contact list, so you’ll need to find people by their usernames to message them. But you can always turn contact access back on if you want.
2. Use Telegram X or Plus Messenger
Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram allows you to use alternative clients to access the platform. The main Telegram messaging client doesn’t let you disable the Stories feature, but if you want to stop viewing stories, you can choose alternative clients instead.
Telegram X is a popular and official alternative to the main Telegram app. It uses a different interface and includes some customization features that cannot be found in the original app. It is updated less frequently than the main app and therefore currently lacks some new features, such as folders, Telegram Premium, video calls and, most importantly, stories.
Third-party clients like Plus Messenger and iMe allow you to hide stories and are another option to consider. However, you should note that these third-party Telegram clients pose a security risk because they have access to your data. Additionally, new features in the official app will take some time to reach third-party customers.
3. Archive all stories
It’s easy to stop viewing stories by archiving them one by one. Story archives are a muted version of Telegram and move current and future stories from a specific person from the home page to the Archived Chats section.
To hide a specific person’s story from the home screen, long press on their story preview and select Hide Story. You can bring them back to the home screen by opening the archive, selecting their story preview, and tapping Unhide Story. Note that stories posted by Telegram cannot be hidden.

4. Vote for the option to turn off Stories on Telegram Stories
If you’re not comfortable using third-party apps or Telegram The Disable Stories feature is one of the most upvoted requests on Telegram’s Bugs and Suggestions website. You can add your vote to the Proposal. Unfortunately, the official response to the proposal does not indicate that this option will appear on the official app any time soon.
5. Turn off story notifications
While this won’t block any stories, you won’t be notified when your contacts post new stories. You can do it manually by long-pressing a particular user’s story preview and turning off Story Notifications.
You can also go to Settings > Notifications and Sounds > Stories and turn off Story Notifications. You can also turn off Automatic Exceptions.
