Let’s see how to recover deleted photos from WhatsApp. We’ll look at possible methods to get your photos back and what you should know about this unfortunate situation.
How to recover automatically saved WhatsApp images
By default, on both Android and iPhone, WhatsApp automatically downloads images from chats to your device. So, the first place you should check to get your deleted photos back from WhatsApp is your phone’s photos app.
On Android, look inside the Gallery or Google Photos app. iPhone users should check out the Photos app. To help narrow your search, switch to the Albums tab and search for WhatsApp. You can also use the gallery app’s search tools to check how long the image was sent if you remember that information.

If you found your deleted WhatsApp photos then you are in luck! You still have a copy and can send or share it anywhere you want. Remember to back it up so you don’t lose it forever. You should also know what to do if WhatsApp stops downloading media in the future.
In case you don’t see the photo here but you use cloud storage on your phone, there’s still hope. If you use the automatic camera upload feature of your cloud storage app, it’s likely that WhatsApp downloaded the image itself, which your cloud storage app then automatically uploaded.
Check inside the Camera Upload, Photo Library, or similar folder of your cloud storage service and you might find the image inside. This is one of the benefits of using a secondary photo app like Google Photos, Dropbox or similar.
How to recover WhatsApp images from chat partners
If the above doesn’t work, recovering deleted photos from WhatsApp without a backup might still be easier than you think. Next, you should check to see if the person (or people) you’re talking to has a copy of the message with the missing photo attached. If you upload an image to a WhatsApp chat and then delete it on your end, the other person in the group chat (or your chat partner) may still have that image on their device.
Ask the person to check their WhatsApp chat for the image. If they have it, they can forward the image to you or even save it to their phone and transfer it using email or another messaging service. WhatsApp lets you see all media shared in a chat by tapping its name at the top and selecting Media, links and documents. You can also advise them to use the above method to see if their phone automatically saves photos or not.
Just because you tap Delete Me on a photo in WhatsApp doesn’t mean everyone deletes that photo. WhatsApp shows the Delete option to everyone for about two days after you send a message, making it a little more difficult to accidentally hit it.

It would be wise to ask people to restore WhatsApp images for you as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the greater the chance that the other person will also delete the photos, losing them when switching to a new phone or similar.
How to Recover Deleted Photos from WhatsApp Backup
If no one else has a copy of your deleted images, the next best way to recover lost WhatsApp photos is through a backup. Both the Android and iPhone versions of WhatsApp support backups (to Google Drive and iCloud, respectively). If it hasn’t been long since you lost your photo(s), restoring the latest WhatsApp backup is your best bet.
Of course, you must enable WhatsApp’s backup feature before deleting images for it to work. If you haven’t backed up before, this method is not an option.
First, navigate to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. You’ll see information here, including when the latest backup was run and how often you’re set to back up your data. If you’ve deleted photos since your last backup, you can uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp to restore the backup and thereby restore your photos.

Simply uninstall the app from your device, then reinstall a fresh copy of WhatsApp from the App Store or Google Play. You’ll have to reconfirm your phone number, then you’ll see a prompt to restore data from a backup, if available. Accept this and WhatsApp will restore all your messages as they were at the time of backup.
Note that doing this will cause you to lose any WhatsApp messages you’ve exchanged since your last backup. Therefore, you should make sure to save or screenshot any important messages before restoring an old backup to get your photos back. Again, time is of the essence here. If another backup has been made since you deleted the photos, you may be out of luck.
How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Photos from Your Phone Storage (Android Only)
On Android, by default, WhatsApp saves every image you send and receive and places them in a specific folder. Therefore, you can delete an image from a WhatsApp chat and still keep it on your phone in this folder.
To take a look, download a free Android discovery app, such as Files by Google, then drill down into the following folder:
Internal storage > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp images

Here you will see all the images you have received in WhatsApp. There is a Sent folder inside this folder that contains photos you have sent. Browse through and see if your missing photos from WhatsApp are inside.
If you’re looking for media other than photos, you’ll also find WhatsApp Video and other folders here—be sure to check them out.
Unfortunately, this step is not an option for iPhone users. This is because Android lets you browse much of your device’s local folder hierarchy, while iOS’s Files app is more limited in this regard.
Consider dedicated recovery solutions for WhatsApp photos
When you search Google for help on recovering deleted WhatsApp images, you may come across dozens of programs that promise a solution. Although they sound great, the reality of recovering WhatsApp photos this way is grim.
Just like recovering deleted WhatsApp messages, most of these “recovery” software won’t help you. While recovering WhatsApp images is a bit different from recovering regular text messages, all of these programs still have the same big problem: they require root access (on Android), which doesn’t work. otherwise pay or both.
These recovery programs tell a similar story. They claim that they can easily recover your messages by installing the software on your desktop and connecting your phone. But when you run the program, you will get no results, find that the application requires root access or to pay to actually restore. These include dr.fone, Johosoft, iMyFone and similar tools.
And they aren’t cheap either. A license typically costs between $20-50, and even if you decide to pay, it’s impossible to know if the software will actually recover anything. You can try if you’re desperate, but don’t get your hopes up.
The truth about WhatsApp photo recovery
Unfortunately, the only real way to recover deleted media from WhatsApp is to have a proper backup beforehand. WhatsApp does not keep your chat history on its servers due to the end-to-end encrypted nature of the app. You cannot contact the company to recover messages or files.
In case you were wondering, you also cannot use file recovery programs like Recuva. These apps cannot scan modern smartphones to recover files because today’s phones do not use the USB Mass Storage protocol like external drives.
Once you delete a message, the only way you can restore it is through a backup file saved on your phone or cloud account. If you have a backup, the best way to restore it is to use the reinstall and restore method detailed above.
Without a backup, you cannot restore those photos. Recovery applications are unlikely to cause deleted images to appear unexpectedly. This is why it is so important to back up everything in advance to avoid such data loss.
If you decide to try one of the recovery programs (which we don’t recommend), make sure you act quickly. When you delete a file from your phone, the file is not deleted immediately. Instead, the operating system marks it as safe to delete. Then, when new data becomes available, it replaces the data tagged for deletion. That means you have the best chance of recovering your data right after deleting it.
Good luck with recovering deleted WhatsApp images
We have come up with possible methods to recover any WhatsApp photos you have deleted. Unfortunately, most methods rely on thinking ahead before the problem occurs, but there’s still a chance you can get your photos back.
If not, now you’ll know what to do to keep your photos safe in the future.
