Here’s what you need to know about word effects, how they make your conversations more interesting, and how to add and remove them on Facebook Messenger.
What is the Word effect on Facebook Messenger?
The idea behind the word effect is to connect specific phrases with different emojis. When you use those phrases on the Messenger app, an animation plays to show those emojis floating from the bottom of the screen to the top.
You can pair your most used emojis with phrases, and the next time you use them, the animations of these emojis will show up on both your screen and yours. person you are chatting with.
Using the word effect, you don’t need to search through a huge list of emojis anymore. Instead, type the word and you’re slowly adding fun to your writing.

Once you complete the steps above, your custom emoji will start appearing in your Effects. You can use them in the same way as we did before with the built-in word effects.
Limitations of using text effects in Facebook Messenger
The word effects feature has some limitations. Let’s talk about a few limitations you should know when using them.
1. You cannot use Word effects on Messenger.com
Text effects are only available on the Messenger app for Android, iPhone and iPad. You can’t use them on Messenger’s web client and desktop app.
If you use the same phrases you added as word effects in the Messenger app on Messenger.com, they will be sent as text. Additionally, recipients won’t see the “sent with text effect” notification under the main phrase like they might see when using text effects through the Messenger app.
2. The total number of word effects you can add is limited
According to Facebook’s Help Center, you can only add 50 custom phrases as word effects. Although this is a decent number of phrases, it probably won’t be enough if you want to cherish every moment with text effects.
Luckily, Messenger allows you to remove custom word effects and add new ones to overcome this limitation.
How to remove text effects in Facebook Messenger
Removing custom text effects you’ve added is quite easy. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open a chat where you are using a specific topic.
- At the top, click the contact’s name.
- Click the Word effect.
- On iOS, swipe left on the word effect phrase and tap Delete. If you’re on Android, press and hold the word effect phrase and then tap Delete.

Everyone in the chat can remove word effects, regardless of who added them.
Can you activate multiple magnetic effects at the same time?
Previously, it was not possible to animate multiple words in a text by entering multiple phrases. If you did so, only word effects related to the phrase that appears first in the message will take effect.
Messenger now supports activating multiple word effects at the same time. Let’s say you want to send two-word effects related to the phrases “Congratulations” and “Happy Birthday” together. You just need to type these phrases into a single text and send it.

Furthermore, all word effects related to the phrase you send as text will be activated simultaneously. So, combine effects to spice up your good wishes.
How do you know you typed the correct phrase to use the Word effect?
Previously, typing phrases that triggered word effects often worked like a standard text message. Meta has tweaked this feature a bit to make it more comfortable for users to use text effects. As you type, the phrase you set to trigger the effect will now appear in bold font.
This font distinguishes word effect phrases from regular text, so you can quickly determine whether you typed correctly.

Messenger Word effect not working?

- Make sure you’re entering the correct phrase you set as the word effect.
- Restart the application to ensure that the temporary error does not affect this feature.
- To rule out problems with your Facebook profile, log out and log back in.
- Restart your device to ensure that the problem with your phone does not prevent the app from working properly.
- Check if your device’s internet connection is working. If it doesn’t work, fix the problem using the relevant fixes.
- Make sure your Messenger app is up to date.
- The person you’re chatting with on Messenger must have the latest version of the Messenger app. Therefore, it is important to confirm with the friend you are chatting with that they have updated the app.
- Clear the Messenger cache on your Android or iOS device to prevent the app’s cache from interfering with the app’s operation.
- If you experience this issue after updating the Messenger app, uninstall the app and reinstall the older version.
