After more than two years of delaying Marvel’s superhero movie, Morbius, will finally hit theaters in 2022. Jared Leto plays the title character Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disease who is trying to cure himself. While successful, the treatment turned him into a vampire. So, despite possessing superhuman strength, heightened senses, and other special powers, he also has a lust for blood that he struggles to control.

The new Morbius trailer makes the film feel like an origin story, as we see the good doctor struggling with his illness before turning into a bloodsucking nightmare. Morbius is very much an anti-hero in the same vein as Venom, with the trailer showing him trying to control his violent impulses. There’s also plenty of action, with Morbius taking down enemies while also discovering he can fly.

Morbius is somewhat of an odd choice when it comes to Marvel characters getting their own movies. He has never been a major villain and has more of a cult following among comic book fans. Although he did have some memorable appearances in Spiderman comics and had several of his own, he never reached the next level and became a prominent character. That said, he is certainly a flawed individual, and his struggles with his insatiable lust for human blood while trying to cure his new condition will certainly make for a series interesting movie.

There’s also the question of where Morbius fits in the Marvel universe. The trailer refers to three different versions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), suggesting that it takes place after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Morbius shows a poster of a likeness of Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man suit with the words “Killer” spray-painted on it, possibly a reference to Away from home. This is followed by a brief shot of the Daily Bugle with headlines involving the villains Black Cat and Rhino, recalling the story of Andrew Garfield. Ultimate Spiderman era. Then Michael Keaton’s Vulture suddenly appears, who as any Spider-Man fan knows, is the main villain in Tom Holland. Spider-Man: Homecoming.

What does all this mean? Your guess is as good as mine, but it seems Morbius is living in a post-Spider-Man: No Way Home multiverse, which means there could be more to come from Living Vampires. Of course, this will depend on how Morbius does at the box office.

The latest part of the MCU will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe house) and co-star Matt Smith (Dr. Ai) as Loxias Crown, good friend of Morbius, aka Hunger, Adria Arjona (6 underground) as Morbius’s fiancée Martine Bancroft, Jared Harris (Crazy) is an advisor to Morbius and Al Madrigal (Way to go back home) and Tyrese Gibson (Fast and furious franchise) as FBI agents Alberto Rodriguez and Simon Stroud, who are assigned to track down Morbius.

Morbius will hit theaters on January 28.
