After three years on the shelf, City of lies is finally released. The much talked about film focuses on the unsolved murders of rap superstars Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG. Although the first trailer debuted in 2018, the film was postponed after star Johnny Depp found himself making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

City of lies based on the books by Randall Sullivan, LAbrynth: A Detective Investigating the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., The Meaning of Death Row Records’ Suge Knight, and The Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal. Depp takes on the role of real-life LAPD detective Russell Poole, who devoted 20 years of his life to finding killers.

Forest Whitaker appears as Jack Jackson, a journalist who is also investigating the case. The two join forces and try to solve one of the biggest murder mysteries of the past 30 years.

While the trailer looks okay, it will be interesting to see if this installment of the murders brings anything to the table that we haven’t seen before. We already have biopics about both rappers and their deaths, while USA Network is speaking out Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious BIG is a great look at the investigation with a stellar cast.

The film is directed by Brad Furman with a script written by Christian Contreras. The film also stars Xander Berkley, Shea Whigham, Rockmond Dunbar, Peter Green and Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace.

City of lies will hit theaters on March 19 before arriving on on-demand services on April 9.
