Schmeichel joined City in 2002. In January 2006, he joined Darlington on loan. On 14 January 2006, at the Darlington Arena, he made his professional debut against Peterborough United.
From January 2007 until the end of the 2006-07 season he was on loan to Falkirk. In 2007, he was man of the match against Rangers. Schmeichel made his debut for Manchester City in August 2007 against West Ham. On August 19, 2007 he played against Manchester United, City’s rival.
In September 2007, he signed a four-year contract with City. He made his Cardiff debut against Scunthorpe United on 27 October 2007. He joined Coventry City on loan on 13 March.
