Michael walked into Maitland Local Court alone today, but a group of students were nearby to show their support for a teacher they said was well-liked. A 62-year-old teacher from Windale was arrested on March 21, following an alleged altercation at Maitland Grossmann High School earlier that day. The students of that school were shocked and expressed their support. Mr Kable was charged with common assault and an arrest violence order (AVO) was issued In court today, Judge Ron Maiden asked if Mr Kable was seeking an adjournment of his case to obtain legal advice or not. Maiden ensured that Mr. Kable understood the conditions of his bail, which continued Maiden’s questioning for three weeks.

When the lunch bell rang, the students dispersed and Kable allegedly punched one student, causing him to fall to the ground. He was arrested that night, charged with assault and suspended. People gathered outside the courthouse Thursday to send him words of encouragement. One student, Banjo Bennett, said it was important that we were here because he needed to know he was being supported.

An online petition in support of the teacher titled Justice for Mr. Kable has received more than 10,800 signatures. It claims video of the incident has been taken out of context. Mr. Kable endured countless amounts of verbal and physical abuse from students. But because the school’s punishment system is weak and inconsistent.

Kable appeared in court on Thursday, asking for time so he could find a lawyer. The judge also reminded Kable of the violent arrest warrant against him, preventing him from contacting the juvenile complaint. The case was returned to Maitland Local Court on April 27, 2023.
