A man has been found “not guilty” after pranking YouTuber Tanner Cook after the content creator followed him around a shopping mall in Virginia.
With the age of social media, prank videos have become popular as content creators have found success in filming practical jokes in real life.
But with these pranks often involving unsuspecting members of the public, things sometimes end in unpredictable ways. YouTube prankster Tanner Cook found this out the hard way after a video he was filming went wrong, leading to the creator being shot in Dulles Town Center Mall, Virginia.
Now the shooter, food delivery driver Alan Colie, 31, has been acquitted of the main charge against him by a US jury.
Video footage of the incident shows Cook approaching Colie in the mall with his cell phone pointed directly at the delivery driver’s face. As the phone repeated the “silly” recording, Colie backed away and told Cook to stop three times before pulling out the gun after about 20 seconds.
Cook, who runs the YouTube channel ‘Classified Goons’, had his gallbladder removed during surgery following the shooting, however Colie was found “not guilty” by reason of self-defense.
The verdict was made after about 5 hours of deliberation, with charges of intentionally causing serious injury and malicious discharge being ultimately acquitted. However, Colie still faces a charge of shooting into an inhabited house, for which he faces up to 10 years in prison.
Speaking with WUSA9, Cook said he plans to continue making videos for YouTube and is not concerned about the ruling; “It’s God’s plan at the end of the day.”
Many people on social media came to Colie’s defense, saying Cook “got what he deserved” for harassing a stranger.
One person wrote on Twitter: “Hopefully we are nearing the end of the days where some people think you can be as horrible as you want to others in public, as long as you film it and call it was a ‘joke’”.
