A man has criticized TikTokers for exploiting his mother’s horrific death to gain views online after she was murdered by her mentally ill daughter.
The true crime community on TikTok is certainly huge, the hashtag has garnered over 47 billion views and shows no signs of slowing down.
However, the ethics of creating videos about real-life tragedies are sometimes questioned – especially when family members of those involved are still dealing with the aftermath.
Now, a man is begging TikTokers to stop using his mother’s murder for views after she was killed four years ago by his daughter, who was struggling with mental illness and was later diagnosed. diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Odessa Carey was 73 years old when she was murdered in her home in 2019 and her family is still “trying to get [their] live together again.” But her son claims TikTokers recounting the horrific details of the crime is making the grief journey more difficult than it needs to be.
In an exclusive statement to the Daily Star, Lawrence Crook said: “People see it as entertainment, to see how many likes they can get. But they need to stop and think about the real families behind it.”
Still facing death and having spent years trying to find his sister’s help before the worst happened, Crook admitted to TikToks “[bring] We all go back to day one.”
He also said he had seen two this year alone, criticizing those who used his mother’s murder for money; “In the end, they don’t understand what they’re talking about. If they stopped and thought about their family they wouldn’t do it.”
