Personal life of Mirabai Starr

Mirabai was born into a Jewish family in 1961. Her parents were extremely progressive with secular ideologies and also did not believe in practicing patriarchy. Judging from her family background, Mirabai’s childhood was spent with her thoughts growing for a better world. The family also participated in the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era. Mirabai defines her parents as “Intellectual artists and advocates of social justice and environmental responsibility.” It was 1972 when She and her family went on a long trip that took them into the jungles of Mexico. The family stayed on an isolated Caribbean beach for several months before heading to the Mexican Mountains. Mirabai is someone who believes in simple and sustainable living like her family. She spent her teenage years living at the Lama Foundation spiritual community. This period of her life greatly influenced Mirabai’s life and writing. Currently, Mirabai lives in the mountains of Northern New Mexico with her lover and husband, Jeff Little, who also has the same Hindi name as Mirabai, Ganga Das. They got married about 20 years ago. The couple has four adorable daughters who have grown up and have children of their own, so Mirabai Starr also has six grandchildren. An unknown tragedy, Mirabai’s youngest daughter Jenny sadly died in a car accident at the age of 14 in 2001.
