The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office has identified the dead man found inside a 55-gallon drum in Malibu Lagoon on Monday. The victim’s name is Javonnta Murphy, as officially announced on Tuesday. The discovery occurred when a park maintenance worker noticed the barrel floating in the water near the Pacific Coast Highway bridge Sunday night. Their efforts to bring it to shore were futile due to its weight, causing the barrel to fall into the water. According to the LA County Sheriff’s Department, the next morning, around 10 a.m., a lifeguard discovered the barrel and swam to retrieve it, leading to the disturbing discovery. According to Lieutenant Hugo Raynaga, the victim’s body did not appear to have decomposed or been submerged in water for a long time. Authorities speculate that high tides may have brought barrels of wine from the sea into the lagoon. This discovery has made beachgoers and surfers in the area extremely concerned and shocked because such incidents are very rare in this location. Detectives are actively investigating the case, canvassing the area for potential clues, witnesses or surveillance footage that could assist in the investigation.
Malibu Javonte Murphy is missing
After the death of Murphy’s grandmother, an important figure in their family, he moved into his own apartment in Sylmar with aspirations of pursuing a rap career and becoming a successful artist. Murphy enjoys spending his free time lifting weights, jogging, and devotedly taking care of his young son. Nelson described Murphy as a good person who was not involved in a gang. The circumstances surrounding his death remain complex, leaving those who knew him struggling to understand what happened. Lt. Hugo Reynaga of the sheriff’s homicide bureau shared details about the discovery of a 55-gallon barrel.
A maintenance worker initially discovered the drum on Sunday and brought it to the sandy shore of the Malibu lagoon in a kayak without opening the lid. The next day, a lifeguard saw the same barrel in the lagoon and swam out to retrieve it. When opening the box, rescue workers discovered a dead body inside. An anonymous source familiar with the investigation pointed out that the suspicious weight of the sealed box and the body’s nakedness suggested foul play, making the death most likely a case of intentional injure.
Javonnta Murphy not only pursued a rap career but also tried to break into the music industry as a singer-songwriter. Currently, the Medical Examiner’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and police have not made any arrests in connection with the case. Javonnie Murphy, father of the deceased, hopes that in the coming days there will be answers and justice for his son. He strongly believes that those responsible will ultimately be held accountable to a higher power for their actions. “The only thing I can say is that you have to answer to the man upstairs,” he expressed. “You must answer to Him upstairs.”
