On 3 February 2013, Thiam broke the junior indoor world record in the pentathlon at an event in Ghent with a total score of 4558. She became the first Belgian woman first broke the record but it was not approved due to lack of anti-doping testing.

In July 2013, Thiam won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the European Junior Athletics Championships. This set a new Belgian record of 6298 points.

Senior career

Nafissatou Thiam won the bronze medal at the 2014 European Championships in the Heptathlon event.

In 2015, she won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Pentathlon. The same year, she won another silver medal at the European U23 Championships in High Jump.

In 2016, Thiam won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in Rio with 6810 points. This marked her personal best scores in five out of seven subjects. She also defeated reigning Olympic and world champion Jessica Ennis-Hill of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Later in 2017, Thiam entered the World Athletics Championships in London as the favorite to win the competition. She eventually won the triathlon world title and became the first Belgian to win a World Athletics Championships gold medal.

She also won a gold medal at the 2018 European Championships, becoming the third woman to win an Olympic, World and European Games title in the heptathlon. She won the title behind Carolina Klüft and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

On 5 March 2021, Thiam won the pentathlon at the 2021 European Indoor Championships. Then, in August 2021, she won her second gold medal at the Olympic Games .
