Emma Tahir, a National Grid intern, claims that Colin Higgins sent her insulting emails at work and asked her to take off her sweater during site visits. After being found to have been sexually harassed by her boss, a National Grid intern was awarded around £360,000 in compensation in a lawsuit. Emma Tahir testified at Hull crown court that Colin Higgins “repeatedly” asked her to take off her sweater, violated her body and wanted her to “marry him”. Ms Tahir, the trainee project supervisor, described how Higgins, her mentor, who is believed to be in his 50s, sent her a series of text messages and emails.

In addition to telling her that she was “the one he loved” and that he “liked” her, he also emailed her with the message “Marry me.” He further questioned whether the two would “get to know each other” if he were younger. Higgins kept his job after an internal review into his conduct. Tahir told the hearing that Higgins ordered her to take off her hooded jumper while visiting a National Grid facility in West Yorkshire shortly after she started working there. However, Ms Tahir filed a lawsuit against National Grid in 2021 alleging sexual harassment, hazing and constructive wrongful dismissal. The court awarded the practitioner £357,000. She argued that her interactions with management damaged her “career path.”

Judge Joanna Wade announced that the award included £40,000 for mental suffering and £10,000 for psychiatric injury. National Grid hired Ms Tahir, a lawyer with a degree from Leeds University, on the building development plan on a salary of £30,000. Last year, National Grid generated revenues of £18.26 billion and employed just under 30,000 people. To establish a “national grid” that could connect the UK’s most efficient power stations with consumers, Lord Weir founded the company in 1925. As a result of this failure, National Grid also is conducting a thorough examination of its processes with the aim of preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
